June 24, 2010 - SINGER®, which has been providing a gateway to the world of sewing for nearly 160 years, is helping to take sewing out of the house and into the streets by partnering with SPACECRAFT and Bags for the People at the 3rd Annual Williamsburg Walks, a car-free block party intended to help visitors rethink public space taking place June 26th and 27th on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Eight blocks of Bedford Avenue will be closed to traffic during the Williamsburg Walks and each block will have a theme – Kids & Family, Artist, Picnic, etc. SPACECRAFT, a unique craft-making and supply boutique located in Williamsburg, and Bags for the People, a non-profit organization that protects the environment by reducing plastic bag waste through reusable bag sewing workshops, will both be in the Skillshare block hosting outdoor sewing labs where people can sit down at a SINGER® Confidence™ machine and make fast, fun projects, even if they have never sewn before.
Saturday and Sunday, Bags for the People team members will guide visitors through one of two reusable bag projects - the signature Bags for the People (BFTP) draw string tote (15 to 20 minute project) or the larger carry bag (20 to 25 minute project).  Those who stop and make a bag can receive special rewards for using a BFTP bag at participating Williamsburg merchants (a list of merchants available during event).
On Saturday, SPACECRAFT will help people learn basic sewing skills and make beautiful, useful picnic blankets that they can take and enjoy once they reach the Picnic block. On Sunday SPACECRAFT and Sewing Rebellion will be hosting "Frankenclothes", where you bring old clothes and refashion them into new ones. From 5-7pm on Sunday, SPACECRAFT will join Bags for the People to host members of the Church of Craft to make BFTP bags.
