May 25, 2010 – This past weekend, Singer Sewing Company, a global leader in the sewing machine industry, lent a helping hand at Maker Faire Bay Area – the 5th annual festival celebrating all things innovative, creative and hand-made – as a sponsor for three diverse project areas. SINGER®:’s easy-to-use sewing machines helped DIYers turn old clothes into new, personalized fashions at the Swap-O-Rama-Rama and assisted the Etsy Plush Street Team as they taught visitors how to make their own plush collectibles. SINGER®:sewing machines and a new line of SINGER® HOME ESSENTIALS™ irons were also on hand at the BurdaStyle Make + Take Loungewhere “makers” could create two easy craft projects.
“For nearly 160 years, SINGER®:has been one of the most trusted and best loved sewing machine brands in the world, offering people the chance to explore their creativity through sewing no matter their skill level,” said Gary Jones, President of Mass Market for SINGER®:, one of SVP Worldwide’s family of brands. “Maker Faire brings together people with an incredibly broad range of interests, many who have never sewn, but who all share a “do-it-yourself” mentality. SINGER®:is proud to be part of Maker Faire Bay Area and to provide tools to support passionate ‘makers’.”
To help continue to support the maker community in the Bay Area, SINGER® is donating all the sewing machines used at this weekend’s festival to local organizations, including San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the experimental, hands-on museum, which will be setting up a sewing learning lab as part of its Studio Gallery.
Maker Faire Bay Area was held on May 22nd and 23rd, 2010 at the San Mateo County Event Center and drew an estimated crown of more than 95,000 people. Maker Faire, started in San Mateo, California in 2006, has expanded to Detroit and New York.  SINGER®:will be sponsoring Maker Faire in each of these locations.
